McCulloch County

Welcome

McCulloch County is located in the northern part of the Edwards Plateau. The county lies in the center section of the state know as the Heart of Texas, the exact geographical center of the state having been located near Mercury.

The south side of the upper meandering Colorado River marks the northern county boundary; the other three sides of the county are practically straight, thus making the county rectangle in shape. On the north, McCulloch County is bounded by Coleman and Brown Counties, by San Saba County on the east, by Mason County of the south, by Menard County on the southwest, and by Concho county on the west.

The county seat of McCulloch County is Brady. The county is an agriculture base county. Agriculture production include: cattle, sheep, hogs, goats, horses, small grain, hay, cotton, and grain sorghum. The county is also composed of a varied industrial base which includes frac sand plants, a wool scouring plant, and a trailer manufacturer. Seven major highways make Brady a major trade center to numerous surrounding rural communities, making wholesale and retail trade a significant contribution to the economy.

Recreation in McCulloch County is abundant with a variety of activities. The area is noted for its excellent hunting opportunities, including trophy whitetail deer, turkey, quail, dove, and feral hogs. Water activities include water skiing, swimming, camping, and fishing at Brady Lake. Many enjoy visits to the county museum, 18-hole golf course, and famous Annual World Championship Goat Cookoff during Labor Day weekend.

Demographically, projections for McCulloch County in the year 2000 show little anticipated change. IN 1996 McCulloch County ranked 172nd among Texas counties, which is not surprising, since it is predominately rural and no part of the metropolitan area. The largest age group is 30 to 64. The majority of the population in 2000 were Anglos (5,961) followed by Hispanics (2,374).

In 1996, McCulloch County had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $16,470. This PCPI ranked 165th in the State, and was 74 percent of the State average, $22,234 and 67 percent of the national average, $24,436. In 1986, the PCPI of McCulloch County was $11,465 and ranked 138th in the State. The average annual growth rate of PCPI over the past 10 years was 3.7 percent. The average annual growth rate for the state was 4.8 percent.
